Q. WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY AND WHY SHOULD I USE IT ?
Solar energy comes from the sun and can be converted into electricity using solar panels. It is clean, renewable, and unlimited, helping you reduce electricity bills, save the environment, and become energy independent.
Q. HOW DO SOLAR PANELS GENERATE ELECTRICITY?
Solar panels have photovoltaic (PV) cells that absorb sunlight and convert it into DC electricity. An inverter changes it to AC electricity, which powers your home or business.
Q. WILL SOLAR PANELS WORK ON CLOUDY OR RAINY DAYS?
YES. Panels still produce electricity even in low light, though the output may drop slightly. Solar works best with direct sunlight, but it never stops completely.
Q. CAN I USE SOLAR ELECTRICITY AT NIGHT?
Panels don’t generate power at night, but you can store excess electricity in batteries for use later. Alternatively, grid-connected systems let you draw electricity from the grid when needed.
Q. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY CAN A SOLAR SYSTEM GENERATE FOR MY HOME?
It depends on your type of solar system , size, sunlight availability , and roof orientation and direction. In general the following calculation may be helpful to understant.
1 kW system generate = 3–5 units/day
3 kW system generate = 10–15 units/day
5 kW system generate = 18–24 units/day
Q. HOW MUCH ROOF SPACE DO I NEED?
The required roof space depends on the type and efficiency of the solar panels you choose. However, the following general estimates can be used as a guideline:
For 1 kW system: Approximately 10–15 sq. meters
For 3 kW system: Approximately 25–30 sq. meters
For 5 kW system: Approximately 40–60 sq. meters
Higher-efficiency panels (such as Monocrystalline) require less space, while lower-efficiency panels (like Polycrystalline) may need more area for the same capacity.
Q. WHAT TYPES OF SOLAR PANELS ARE AVAILABLE?
The following are the main types of solar panels currently used in the Indian market. However, the solar industry is growing rapidly, and new technologies are being introduced frequently:
Monocrystalline (Mono-Si): High efficiency, space-saving, and premium quality.
Polycrystalline (Poly-Si): Cost-effective with slightly lower efficiency.
TOPCon: Advanced technology offering superior efficiency and performance.
Bifacial: Generates power from both front and rear sides for higher output.
Thin-Film: Lightweight and flexible, suitable for special or uneven surfaces.
Q. HOW LONG DOES INSTALLATION TAKE AND DO I NEED PERMISSIONS?
Residential systems usually take 7–15 days. For grid-connected systems, approvals from your electricity provider are needed for net metering.
Q. HOW WILL SOLAR AFFECT MY ELECTRICITY BILLS?
A solar system can reduce your bills by 50–90%, depending on system size and usage. Excess electricity can often be sold back to the grid through net metering.
Q. WHAT IS NET METERING?
Net Metering allows you to send unused solar electricity to the grid and receive credit. This ensures you pay less or even zero for electricity if your system produces more than you use.
Q. CAN SOLAR SYSTEMS FULLY MEET MY ENERGY NEEDS?
YES, if your system is sized correctly. Small systems can supplement grid electricity, while larger systems with batteries can meet most or all household energy needs.
Q. HOW MUCH DOES A SOLAR SYSTEM COST IN INDIA?
The cost of a solar system in India varies depending on the type of panels, inverter quality, and installation structure. Below are approximate price ranges (including installation):
1 kW system : ₹.45,000 – ₹.65,000
3 kW system : ₹.1,50,000 – ₹.1,80,000
5 kW system : ₹.2,50,000 – ₹.3,00,000
Note : Government subsidies under MNRE-approved schemes can reduce the total cost by 30–40% for eligible residential rooftop installations.
Q. HOW MUCH IS THE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES ON SOLAR SYSTEM COST IN INDIA?
YES, The Indian government offers several subsidy schemes to make solar energy more affordable for households, farmers, and institutions.
Q. ARE LOANS OR FINANCING OPTIONS AVAILABLE?
YES. Nationalized Banks, NBFCs, and solar companies offer Loan and EMI options and government-backed loans, now a days private banks are also considering loan on case to case basis.
Q. HOW LONG DO SOLAR PANELS LAST?
Solar Panels typically last 20–30 years. Efficiency reduces very slowly, and warranties cover most defects. Appropriate timely maintainance will support to serve foar a better life span.
Q. DO SOLAR PANELS NEED MAINTENANCE?
Minimal maintenance is required. Cleaning 2–4 times a year is enough. Advanced systems may include automated cleaning or monitoring solutions.
CAN SOLAR PANELS GET DAMAGED BY HEAT OR DUST?
No, Generally High-quality panels are built to withstand heat, dust, and rain, though extreme conditions it may slightly reduce output.
Q. CAN I INSTALL SOLAR PANELS ON MY HOME OR APARTMENT?
YES. Solar works on rooftops, terraces, or building structures. For apartments, community solar or group rooftop systems are often used.
Q. HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOLAR SYSTEM FOR MY HOME OR BUSINESS?
Consider your electricity usage and calculate the requirement, roof space availability, budget, and sunlight availability. Decide whether you need batteries for backup, and choose the right system type:
1) On-Grid: Connected to the grid, can sell extra power.
2) Off-Grid: Independent, requires batteries.
3) Hybrid: Grid + batteries for backup.
Q. CAN I EXPAND MY SOLAR SYSTEM LATER?
YES. Solar systems are modular, so you can add Solar Panels, Invorten and Batteries as your energy needs and requirement.
Q. ARE THERE GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES FOR SOLAR IN INDIA?
YES. Residential systems can get up to 30% subsidy, and net metering allows you to sell excess electricity. Commercial and industrial systems also have tax benefits and preferential tariffs.
Q. WHAT IS A DCR SOLAR PANEL?
A DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) solar panel is one in which both the solar cells and modules are manufactured in India. These panels meet the government’s domestic manufacturing norms and are primarily used in government or subsidized solar projects.
Q. WHAT IS A NON-DCR SOLAR PANEL?
Non-DCR solar panels are made using imported solar cells, though the modules may be assembled in India. These panels are generally used in private or commercial projects where DCR requirements are not mandatory.
Q. WHAT IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DCR AND NON-DCR PANELS?
The key difference lies in the origin of the solar cells.
DCR panels: Cells and modules are both made in India.
Non-DCR panels: Cells are imported, and modules may be assembled locally.
Q. WHICH PROJECTS REQUIRE DCR PANELS?
DCR panels are mandatory for government-sponsored schemes, such as projects under the PM-KUSUM, Government Rooftop Subsidy Program, and other MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) initiatives.
Q. ARE DCR PANELS BETTER THAN NON-DCR PANELS?
Both types perform well, but DCR panels support “Make in India” and ensure domestic manufacturing growth.
Non-DCR panels, however, may offer slightly higher efficiency at a lower cost due to advanced foreign cell technology but they are not eligiable for government subsidies.
Q. CAN I USE NON-DCR PANELS FOR RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL USE?
YES. Non-DCR panels can be freely used for residential, commercial, and industrial solar installations where government subsidies or DCR requirements not required.
Q. ARE DCR PANELS ELIGIBLE FOR GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES?
YES, Only DCR panels are eligible for central and state government subsidies under approved programs by MNRE.
